Utah’s state bird, the California Gull (Larus californicus), is more than just a familiar sight around lakes and parks. This bird holds a special place in Utah’s history because of its role in what is known as the “Miracle of the Gulls.” In 1955, the California Gull was officially designated as the state bird, symbolizing both resilience and gratitude.
The story goes back to the mid-1800s, when early Utah settlers faced devastating crop infestations from swarms of crickets. Just as it seemed the crops would be destroyed, flocks of California Gulls arrived and consumed huge numbers of the insects, saving much of the harvest. This event became legendary, and the gulls were honored for their unexpected rescue. Today, a monument in Salt Lake City’s Temple Square commemorates this moment in Utah’s history.
Beyond its symbolic importance, the California Gull is a hardy and adaptable bird. It can be found across Utah, often near the Great Salt Lake, reservoirs, and even city parks. With its white body, gray wings, and black wingtips, it is easily recognizable. Gulls are opportunistic feeders, eating insects, fish, and even leftover scraps, which helps explain how they were able to thrive and make such an impact during the pioneers’ crisis.
