The Founding of Salt Lake City and the Mormon Pioneer Journey
Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormon pioneers. Seeking freedom to practice their religion without persecution, these pioneers traveled west under the leadership of Brigham Young in search of a permanent settlement.
The journey to the Salt Lake Valley was long and challenging. Thousands of pioneers crossed plains, rivers, and mountain ranges using wagons and handcarts.
